Winona Carter, 98, of Mount Ida, Arkansas, went to Heaven on Sunday, August 17, 2025. She passed away peacefully in the Montgomery County Nursing Home in Mt Ida, Arkansas. Winona was married to Morris Carter on the 28th of September, 1946, and was the mother of three adult sons. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Winona was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years; Morris Carter, son; Tommy Trapp, parents; Isom and Molly Gibbs, brothers; Elton, Grover and Ellis Gibbs, and sisters; Zetta McKinney, Dale Scott, Alma Whisenhunt, and Ellen Whisenhunt.
Winona leaves behind two sons; Ronnie Carter and Clay Carter, four grandchildren; Benjamin Carter, Carla Carter, Jessi Miller and Spence Carter, and three great grandchildren; Kai Carter, Harper Miller, and Knox Miller. Also left behind are so many others, including nieces, nephews and friends, all who were loved and cherished.
Born in Sims Arkansas November 24, 1926, she was the daughter of Isom and Molly (Summit) Gibbs of Sims, and the youngest of eight children. Winona was a lifelong member of the Lone Valley Church of God in Sims, and the last living grandchild of the Lone Valley church founder, Daniel Summit. As she traveled through the Sims community and surrounding area, Winona would always tell which families lived where, the names of their children, who those children married, and even the names of their grandchildren. And there were so many stories to go along with each family. Winona was a Carter, and definitely a Gibbs and Summit. But she was also a McKinney, Barber, Whisenhunt, Stovall, Elder, Dillard, Qualls, Shaw, Plyler, Gray and other family names who settled in the Sims community. Those are the families Winona knew as a child almost a century ago, who helped form the woman she was. Her memory, knowledge and love of the Sims community and its’ people never failed.
The family would like to thank everyone for the love and support they have provided for Mom throughout her life. A special thanks to the caregivers at the Mt Ida Assisted Living facility and Mt Ida Nursing Home.
Services will be held at the Lone Valley Church, Sims, Arkansas on Thursday, 21 August, at 11am. Brother Jerry Stovall will officiate. Interment will follow at Lone Valley Cemetery.
