Waylon Abernathy Sr., 90, of Benton, AR passed away August 16, 2025, in Little Rock, AR with family by his side. Waylon was born July 9, 1935, in Hog Jaw Community near Oden, AR to Buford and Bessie (Jackson) Abernathy. Waylon is preceded in death by both parents, and daughter Patty Abernathy.
Waylon was a pillar in the community, giving generously of his time and talents. He worked on numerous projects throughout his life, and as a general contractor, retailer and developer. He built both commercial and residential properties that continue to stand as a testament to his dedication and craftsmanship in Mt. Ida and throughout the state.
Waylon is survived by his wife Karen Abernathy; his son Waylon Abernathy Jr. and wife Ramona; his daughters Sharon Abernathy Blevins, Angie Dischinger and husband Brian, and Hollie Marling and husband Michael; his grandchildren Sarah Odle (Brian), Lindsay Harlan (Nick), Waylon Abernathy III (Tori), Elias, Alisa, Asher, Grayson, and Tinley Marling, and Taylor and Kaylie Dischinger; his great-grandchildren Madelyn and Amelia Odle, Hazel Grace and Walker Harlan, and Wit and Sylvie (on the way) Abernathy; his brother Alton Abernathy; his sister Willa Mae Abernathy Hale; along with nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends.
Service Friday, August 22, 2025, at 10:30 at First Baptist Church of Mount Ida, AR. Bro. Jerry Stovall. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olive Cemetery in the community of Hog Jaw. Pallbearers Waylon Abernathy Jr., Waylon Abernathy III, Nick Harlan, Brian Odle, Michael Marling and Brian Dischinger. Arrangements under the direction of Thornton Funeral Home in Mount Ida, AR.
